Every Child Deserves a Music Education...by Art Scott, 40 year Music Educator

"Music is Therapy...It is a communication far more powerful than words, far more immediate, far more efficient."  Yehudi Menuhin

Many years ago, I had the privilege of hearing a dear woman, Music Educator from Tennessee talk about the Joy of Music, and with a very thick, endearing, southern accent she announced to our gathering of local Piano Teachers...

..."Every Child Deserves a Music Education"

I understood and agreed with her statement.  I have repeated it hundreds of times over my career.

Today we have thousands of parents throughout the United States whose children are daily being diagnosed with AD, ADHD, Autism and Asperger's Syndrome.   I have taught many children who are 'on the spectrum'.

I improved my teaching skills by going back to school.   I now have a Master of Science degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.   I have developed a proven methodology which works well with special needs children.   My undergraduate is in Music Education with Piano as my major instrument; voice was my minor.

I possess strong, intuitive skills in working with younger children.   Most parents understand and appreciate the patience, care and skill it takes to work with all children; special needs children in addition require more time and insight in order to work effectively and help them enjoy learning.   I find this process very rewarding.

One of my early success stories involved a 12 year old young man, Stephen, whose parents were professionals in a local city.   The mother had attempted to teach him piano for a few years but her efforts were in vain.

I noticed in one of my first lessons with Stephen that every time he played a wrong note, he would tear up and start to cry.   I realized, to gain any amount of progress, I would have to intervene and help Stephen change his behavior.   I told him a short story and mentioned that if we had an earthquake, that would be a severe tragedy.

I then told him that playing a wrong note on the piano, was not something to get upset about...but, it is part of the learning process. We went back to playing, and the next time he hit a wrong note, he smiled and said, "Not an earthquake" and corrected the note and went on with the piece.

I was amazed!   I have many experiences like this to share.

If you're exhausted trying to find some creative outlet, I can introduce Music and many different ideas which can help you and your child feel empowered and successful.
